Topic: Abridged, Arranged, Simplified–Yes or No
Obviously there is a great range in quality when it comes to altering a composer’s original score, when one considers the brilliant transcriptions by Liszt as opposed to the reprehensible examples available over the Internet. In a round table discussion we will explore the benefits and pitfalls of straying from the original intent of the composer. Does this send the wrong message to a student, that a score can be changed and therefore compromise the integrity of the interpretation? Or can this serve as a source of inspiration to keep a student dedicated to practicing? Can certain arrangements actually make a student think more creatively?
Feel free to share and demonstrate any examples of either very excellent or not so suitable arrangements which might inform us. Kindly keep your examples and comments limited to a minute or so. Every teacher’s input is valuable!
Zelma Bodzin Will host a hybrid zoom session. Kindly let us know if you would like to attend either in person or over zoom. Please respond to [email protected].
Looking forward to an exciting exchange of ideas!
